Communicating in a healthcare setting with people who have hearing loss

Communicating in a healthcare setting with people who have hearing loss

Healthcare staff in provision of services rendered need to obtain information and give advice, and patients need to ask questions and share their concerns. Therefore, to provide a thorough service for hearing impaired patients, it is of paramount importance that their communication needs are acknowledged and addressed by those responsible for the providing healthcare service.

Social media is changing healthcare

Smartphones has made the internet pervasive and therefore social media practically become a global pastime. With an ever increasing reach, technological improvement has altered the landscape of healthcare as the professional and the service user is empowered by patients taking an active role in their own healthcare as they become more informed.

Every silver lining has a dark cloud and the use of social media if used inappropriately could jeopardise your professional registration. The NMC has drafted guidance/code to emphasise the importance of patient or people centred care.

BNA Response to Shortage of Midwives in Hospitals

The BNA, British Nursing Association, is responding to the UK shortage of midwives, highlighted in a BBC Panorama programme (July 25 2011), with a recruitment drive for agency midwives.

British Nursing Association is a UK nursing agency that specialises in temporary work for qualified midwives and other nurses who require extra hours or who want to work part-time because of family commitments, for example. Pay rates are up to £36.96 per hour for midwife team managers in Central London

The BBC investigation found that maternity units nationwide closed 1,055 times in 2010, mainly because of under-staffing or lack of beds. The problem was worst in London, with Barnet Hospital closing its maternity unit doors 102 times. Cathy Warwick general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “The most critical issue facing maternity services is that they are desperately short of midwives.”

British Nursing Association says that qualified midwives and other staff interested in agency work should register contact details on-line in the first instance for agency jobs nationwide – also see our Facebook Page

Top 10 Tips for the Best Nursing Agency Jobs

With public sector cutbacks, good nursing agency and HCA jobs are more in demand than ever before - particularly for staff who want to work at the times and locations of their choice, says BNA, which has helped healthcare staff to further their career goals since 1948. Agency work with a reputable agency still offers great opportunities for nurses who want extra shifts and pay or need to balance their work-life commitments because they have young family for example.

The BNA, British Nursing Association, offers this advice for getting the most from nursing agency work:

1) Register with several nursing agencies: to increase your opportunities for work, you can register through the BNA web site just once to work for five different agencies - click here to register.

2) At registration, ensure you provide all the information that’s required: BNA provides a detailed list of documents you will need to supply – and meets with all candidates locally to help them complete the registration process. Initial registration should always be started on-line through the BNA web site. Documents required include: a completed CRB; a detailed BNA application form; and job references.

3) Keep your registrations current: once you have registered with the nursing agency, ensure that your annual certifications are up to date – whether for training, CRB or other requirements.

4) Are you a specialist nurse, ICU, PICU or SCBU trained for example? There is high demand for specialist nurses in many regions. Current certificates are essential as proof of your speciality, so BNA can match your qualifications with relevant work. Also, if you do specialist training on an annual basis in your permanent job - such as Ventilator, Tracheostomy, IV administration – please inform the agency.

5) Let the agency know when you are free to work: BNA’s on-line web diary enables nurses and HCAs to confirm when they are available. It’s worth updating the diary at least every week. Be flexible: if BNA knows that you will accept work at short notice - or will work some evenings, weekends or Bank Holidays - you will get more, higher-paying shifts.

6) Stay in touch: find out which BNA consultants deal with the area where you want to work. E-mail the names of the towns and hospitals. BNA’s consultants are there to help, and when they get to know you and the type of work you want, it will increase work opportunities

7) Social Media: it’s worth registering for BNA’s Facebook and Twitter pages so that you are up to date on agency news and job opportunities – you can see details too at British Nursing Association.

8) Complaints: feedback is always welcome. Let BNA know if there is anything with which you are unhappy or could be done differently - or issues you have in the workplace. Good agencies are grateful for feedback.

9) Tell a friend: if you have nursing friends who are interested in agency work, then telling them about the agency is helpful for feedback and communication. Visit BNA’s Facebook and click on ‘Like’ or email us as info@bna.co.uk

10) Consider your career: are you looking for specific types of work or experience? If you are, do discuss this with your BNA consultant, as the agency may be able to help, if you meet the standards required by clients for relevant shifts.

CRB Renewal in just Nine Days with The British Nursing Association

Agency nurses can now apply for CRB Criminal records Bureau checks on the internet with the British Nursing Association following the release of the latest application update of the agency’s web-based system, A24 Connect.

GROUP_DOCTORS.jpg

This new advance in CRB renewal will speed up dramatically the turnaround of Criminal Records checks, the agency says, to ensure that all its registered medical staff remain compliant and are able to work at all times. The association, a division of the A24 Group, estimates that renewals will take from just nine days, where there are no previous convictions or cautions present on the applicant’s record.

Penny Streeter OBE is managing director of the A24 Group, which employs a dedicated development team of 18 software developers.

“This is a further stage in our constant investment in healthcare staffing technology and services – to ensure that we remain the leading agency group. We’re one of the largest users of the Criminal Records Bureau and process in excess of 900 enhanced disclosures every month and have worked with the bureau to develop our CRB online module.”

The requirement by the NHS is that all agency workers must hold an enhanced CRB disclosure that is less than 12 months old. With current delays within the CRB system, says the agency, this has meant that some candidates currently have to re-apply four months before expiration.

Agency workers registered with the association, can apply by logging onto A24connect the unique web portal that enables medical staff to access work information and interact with the agency online 24 hours a day. Web visitors are prompted if their CRB certification is due for renewal and can then complete an on-line application form.

Agency staff simply log onto A24connect and follow the prompts to complete the online CRB application form. An electronic payment is then required for the CRB fee, currently £46.20. The agency countersigns the document once it is received and the application is automatically sent to the CRB. Candidates can log into A24 Connect to track progress at any time.

The association advises that with the introduction of the web-based service, applications on CRB printed forms cannot be accepted by the agency, and all submissions and payments must be on-line.

A24 Connect is an advanced web-based system that offers Agency nurses and HCAs an on-line work diary and range of advanced service features to help personnel to save time and ensure compliance. Candidates can update their availability for work, change bank information, download timesheets, view their compliance status, manage work history and references, and provide feedback.

CRB Checks Now On-line for Agency Nurses & HCAs at British Nursing Association

To beat current delays in the CRB registration system, agency nurses and HCA members registered with the BNA, British Nursing Association, and working in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland can now apply for and renew their Criminal Records Bureau checks online. This is the latest member application update by the IT development team at the association, founded in 1948, which also features on-line work diaries, automatic notification of compliance renewal and on-line training facilities.

This new advance in CRB registration will speed up dramatically the turnaround of Criminal Records checks, says the British Nursing Association, and helps to ensure that all registered medical staff remain compliant and able to work at any time. Once registered members have completed the on-line application form, they can make an electronic payment with PayPal at the CRB fee of £46.20.

The requirement by the NHS is that all agency workers must hold an enhanced disclosure that is less than 12 months old. But with current delays within the CRB system this has meant

that some candidates have to re-apply four months early to ensure that they have a current

CRB in their possession that at all times is less than 12 months old. The new service from BNA will ensure a more timely renewal the association says.

A division of the A24 Group, the Group newsletter also has news of the Agency Workers Directive and Regulations for BNA members. The AWD affects their rights to certain benefits but has no impact on a nurse or HCA’s status as an agency worker. BNA will be providing further details of the effects of the AWD.

In the newsletter BNA also reminds agency nurses and HCAs that it is essential that every healthcare professional who works outside of the NHS maintains professional indemnity cover at all times.

The BNA, British Nursing Association, has helped healthcare staff to further their career goals since 1948. BNA’s nursing agency service is the longest running in the UK. The association today is a preferred supplier of agency nurses and HCA jobs and staff to NHS and private hospitals, GP Surgeries and other Primary Care service providers - as well as the domiciliary homecare sector.

Qualified nurses and HCAs not already registered with BNA can register on-line for agency jobs nationwide.
