CRB Renewal in just Nine Days with The British Nursing Association

Agency nurses can now apply for CRB Criminal records Bureau checks on the internet with the British Nursing Association following the release of the latest application update of the agency’s web-based system, A24 Connect.

GROUP_DOCTORS.jpg

This new advance in CRB renewal will speed up dramatically the turnaround of Criminal Records checks, the agency says, to ensure that all its registered medical staff remain compliant and are able to work at all times. The association, a division of the A24 Group, estimates that renewals will take from just nine days, where there are no previous convictions or cautions present on the applicant’s record.

Penny Streeter OBE is managing director of the A24 Group, which employs a dedicated development team of 18 software developers.

“This is a further stage in our constant investment in healthcare staffing technology and services – to ensure that we remain the leading agency group. We’re one of the largest users of the Criminal Records Bureau and process in excess of 900 enhanced disclosures every month and have worked with the bureau to develop our CRB online module.”

The requirement by the NHS is that all agency workers must hold an enhanced CRB disclosure that is less than 12 months old. With current delays within the CRB system, says the agency, this has meant that some candidates currently have to re-apply four months before expiration.

Agency workers registered with the association, can apply by logging onto A24connect the unique web portal that enables medical staff to access work information and interact with the agency online 24 hours a day. Web visitors are prompted if their CRB certification is due for renewal and can then complete an on-line application form.

Agency staff simply log onto A24connect and follow the prompts to complete the online CRB application form. An electronic payment is then required for the CRB fee, currently £46.20. The agency countersigns the document once it is received and the application is automatically sent to the CRB. Candidates can log into A24 Connect to track progress at any time.

The association advises that with the introduction of the web-based service, applications on CRB printed forms cannot be accepted by the agency, and all submissions and payments must be on-line.

A24 Connect is an advanced web-based system that offers Agency nurses and HCAs an on-line work diary and range of advanced service features to help personnel to save time and ensure compliance. Candidates can update their availability for work, change bank information, download timesheets, view their compliance status, manage work history and references, and provide feedback.

CRB Checks Now On-line for Agency Nurses & HCAs at British Nursing Association

To beat current delays in the CRB registration system, agency nurses and HCA members registered with the BNA, British Nursing Association, and working in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland can now apply for and renew their Criminal Records Bureau checks online. This is the latest member application update by the IT development team at the association, founded in 1948, which also features on-line work diaries, automatic notification of compliance renewal and on-line training facilities.

This new advance in CRB registration will speed up dramatically the turnaround of Criminal Records checks, says the British Nursing Association, and helps to ensure that all registered medical staff remain compliant and able to work at any time. Once registered members have completed the on-line application form, they can make an electronic payment with PayPal at the CRB fee of £46.20.

The requirement by the NHS is that all agency workers must hold an enhanced disclosure that is less than 12 months old. But with current delays within the CRB system this has meant

that some candidates have to re-apply four months early to ensure that they have a current

CRB in their possession that at all times is less than 12 months old. The new service from BNA will ensure a more timely renewal the association says.

A division of the A24 Group, the Group newsletter also has news of the Agency Workers Directive and Regulations for BNA members. The AWD affects their rights to certain benefits but has no impact on a nurse or HCA’s status as an agency worker. BNA will be providing further details of the effects of the AWD.

In the newsletter BNA also reminds agency nurses and HCAs that it is essential that every healthcare professional who works outside of the NHS maintains professional indemnity cover at all times.

The BNA, British Nursing Association, has helped healthcare staff to further their career goals since 1948. BNA’s nursing agency service is the longest running in the UK. The association today is a preferred supplier of agency nurses and HCA jobs and staff to NHS and private hospitals, GP Surgeries and other Primary Care service providers - as well as the domiciliary homecare sector.

UK’s Oldest Nursing Agency is 64 years old!

British Nursing Association is 64 years old and is the UK’s longest serving agency. It was founded in 1948 as a cooperative to supply nurses to the National Health Service, which was also established in the same year.

BNA has had an eventful history. At one time is was taken into Government ownership, and was owned for three years by cigarette manufacturer BAT, British American Tobacco. It is now an independent division of a private company, the A24 Group, which specialises in medical staffing, including locums and AHPs. The group was the first organisation in the sector to offer a 24-7 service to care providers, including hospitals, care homes, the prison service and private health facilities.

Whilst it may be the oldest agency in the sector, BNA offers one of the most advanced systems for the management and booking of nurses and HCAs, it says. The ICT System was developed in-house for nurse and HCA registration, compliance, selection and booking. It results from 100,000 hours of development time over six years.

System safeguards include automated restrictions for the selection of agency staff until after completion of full registration, including CRB and credential checks. All relevant employment, training and other references must be fully confirmed; and the work record checked, verified again and finally cleared.

For booking safety, agency consultants can match the exact requirements of clients according to staff qualifications, experience and availability. Face-to-face interviews are mandatory to confirm language ability, with completion of a 20 plus page registration form, including full details of career history and qualifications as well as four referees; original ‘right to work’, qualifications and training certificates; and an employer’s report.

The compliance team includes over 100 dedicated staff to obtain verified professional references from past employers, carry out Occupational Health checks for fitness to work, verify professional qualifications, apply for CRBs, and confirm mandatory training is certificated.

A quality control team re-checks all data. BNA provides jobs and staff in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester; Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Sunderland and Wakefield.

Agency Workers Alert: Time for Free NHS Flu Jab

The British Nursing Association is encouraging all UK healthcare workers to have the free NHS Flu jab for which all healthcare workers are eligible.

Frontline nurses, HCAs and other agency workers should protect themselves by having the flu vaccine to prevent the spread of flu to colleagues and other members of the community.

The 2012/13 UK vaccine protects against three types of flu virus, according to the NHS Cumbria Partnership. This year's flu jab protects against:

  • H1N1 - the strain of flu that caused the swine flu pandemic in 2009
  • H3N2 - a strain of flu that can infect birds and mammals and was active in 2011
  • A strain of flu that was active in 2010 known as B/Wisconsin/1

Britons are the 'most unhygienic nation', according to a new report. Britons were half as likely as other nationals to cover their hands and mouth more frequently when coughing or sneezing during the swine flu pandemic, the study has suggested.

The findings were published in the journal 'Lancet Infectious Diseases'. Dr Gillian Steel Fisher of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, in America, said: "The wide variations between countries in our study shows that in the event of another serious outbreak of infectious disease, public perceptions have to be taken into account to best tailor and communicate policy approaches that need public support in each country.

"Our findings suggest that promoting non-pharmaceutical interventions - such as handwashing and avoiding large public gatherings of people - do not jeopardise the adoption of vaccination, though the uptake of vaccines was low compared to other behaviours in all countries we surveyed.

"To maximise the effect of pandemic policies, future efforts might need to combine vaccination programmes with support for the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions."

BNA Weather Warning

The British Nursing Association is advising agency workers to check the weather before travelling to shift assignments during the forecast cold spell. Agency nurses and HCA health care assistants should contact their BNA support consultant if they believe that they might be delayed in travelling to a shift on time.

This will enable the agency to advise the client healthcare service provider. Ice and freezing temperatures are forecast for at least the next two days.

The agency is advising agency workers to check weather forecasts such as at the Met Office and take advice regarding care preparation and maintenance from organisations such as the AA, which issues this advice before setting off on a car journey:

  • Get up at least 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare the car.
  • Don't drive off like a tank-commander, with a tiny hole cleared in the windscreen. Clear all windows using a scraper and de-icer.
  • Use a cigarette lighter to warm a key for a frozen lock. Don't breathe on the lock, as the moisture will condense and freeze.

Plan routes to favour major roads which are more likely to have been cleared and gritted. Put safety before punctuality when the bad weather closes in. Allow extra time for winter journeys but be prepared for the inevitability of being late for work due to unexpected delay.

BNA continues to provide temporary staff whatever the conditions. The British Nursing Association has provided healthcare staff since 1948, says BNA director Adam Streeter. BNA is the longest serving of all UK nursing agencies. The association is a preferred supplier of agency nurses and HCA staff to NHS and private hospitals, GP Surgeries and other Primary Care service providers - as well as the domiciliary homecare sector.
